Artist's Comments

This is the finished album cover for Etiku World Recordings number one. It was designed entirely to represent experiences of the soul through music, and the extensions of the soul into sound. The two fundamental parts of the tree represent the concious and subconcious parts of spiritual connections, the branches offering more concrete examples, and the roots containing a more stylistic and figurative approach. The serpents represent my fixation on Ouroboros and represent several different themes as well, ranging from the serpent in the tree of life to the dancing line of the soul that is individual in every person. This finished copy will be on the album which should be released by May, and I've retained the license on this one, which is why I can post it here. I hope you enjoy it! :)

Oh my god to of my favorite themes. A absolutely beautiful piece. Did you pre-plan it in pencil first?

It's funny when I think about it, because the concept took a couple of weeks to think-up, while I was milling over ideas, but as soon as I had the basic idea, I laid out the space on the paper. Since it is for an album cover, I wanted the original size to be used, rather than having to enlarge it at all. So I set the area to occupy about 60-70% of the 12x12 standard size, but as I went, it kept getting larger and larger, until the vertical height was almost the full 12 inches. I would plan some of the areas with pencil (for instance the loops of the snake) and then freehand fill the rest of the things around. Since the only real constant were the snakes, it didn't require a full plan-out first, and it's with those kind of drawings where your concious can really meet your subconcious in art, as you basically have a detailed conversation between the two when you are finally finished. Thanks for the comment :)

That looks like it was a lot of fun.

LOL! It was indeed. I have one more in progress that I need to finish, but I have over two years and 400some hours into it, so you'll get to see it semi-soon, i think.

That's some magnificent pencil magic right there. This could easily be mistaken for LOTR art. It's beautiful :D
